Herselt Ratcom EuropTo date there have been thousands of scrap loads rejected
because of radioactive content and more than 70 reported incidents of highly
radioactive SEALED sources being smelted in ferrous and non-ferrous operations.
Typically, the cost of a single load rejection due to radioactive material is
approximately $3,500.00. However a far more serious situation occurs when a
sealed source is smelted in a furnace. The result is extensive plant contamination
with a cleanup and disposal cost that can run into millions of dollars. In three
of these cases, the companies had multiple incidents within months of each other.
Since the 1984 Mexican accident in Juarez, the worst reported incident occurred
in 1998 in Spain. A Spanish steel plant melted a SEALED radioactive source in
their arc furnace. Hundreds of kilometers away the radioactive dust particles
being carried in the wind set off alarms on a countrywide radiation monitoring
system in Switzerland. The cleanup and disposal cost where millions of dollars.
In order to attempt to eliminate the possibility of radioactive material entering
a facility, sensitive radiation detection systems have been designed for numerous
applications and points of entry including weigh scales, entry gates, conveyor
belts and charge buckets. With this letter, we would like to introduce our full

The AT-900 Series Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) is a complete vehicle monitoring system used for the rapid detection of unknown hidden radioactive sources in moving vehicles. A full color console guides a gatehouse operator to each radiation alarm, linking the alarm to a passing vehicle. The AT-900 Series is a sophisticated design enabling operators to initiate the proper response once the system has alarmed. AT-900 Series Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM)The AT-900 Series Radiation Portal Monitor is a user-friendly, console-driven, automatic system, designed for "one button" operation. The AT-900S is a modular design consisting of a variable number of independent detectors that enables system configuration adaptations for specific applications and installation requirements. The AT-900 Series has multiple user-settable energy-dependent alarm thresholds that minimize unnecessary alarms from normal cargo materials. AT-980 Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM)The AT-980 Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) series uses advanced passive scanning technology to detect gamma and neutron radiation sources in closed, moving vehicles, containers and railcars. The AT-980 RPM can scan an entire container, trailer or railcar in seconds, enabling security personnel to screen all traffic passing through a facility or checkpoint with minimal impact on traffic. SAIC has manufactured more than 5,000 RPMs for government agencies and commercial clients in the U.S. and abroad. The AT-980 RPM is ideal in customs and security applications to aid in the detection of illicit nuclear materials and radioactive sources. The two primary targets are special nuclear material (SNM) used in the creation of atomic weapons and radioactive dispersal devices (RDDs) that use large commercial radioactive sources coupled with a high explosive to provide a non-nuclear blast, leaving significant radioactive contamination. In today's world, a terrorist group could attempt to conceal and smuggle shielded illicit radioactive material within a vehicle or container. However, the AT-980 RPMs sophisticated spectral analysis techniques and low-noise signal processing provide enhanced sensitivity to low level sources and their location, even when shielded. The major advances in the AT-980 RPMs system analysis capability make it an invaluable asset for security personnel at any checkpoint or border crossing. A GR-500 Series detection system consists of one controller unit, called a console, and one to eight detector assemblies. The GR-500 offers comprehensive tools to help detect deeply buried sources, including unique alarm thresholds for each vehicle based on its individual radiation profile and the ability to set low alarm thresholds - 30%-50% below natural The GR-500 Series is a portal radiation monitoring system (RPM) that is designed to detect the presence of a shielded radioactive source buried in a moving vehicle. Vehicles pass between two large detectors at a controlled speed, and using sophisticated algorithms, the detector output is analyzed and in turn provides visual and audible alarms indicating the location of the radioactive source. The system offers reliable, year-round operation and is suitable for: The ASM/III vehicle monitoring systems are designed to utilize industry- proven detector designs. The system uses state-of-the-art, detection algorithms, and dvanced, lownoise electronics technology, to provide the perfect solution for industrial vehicle monitoring applications requiring unparalleled sensitivity and reliability. Detector configurations that provide both vertical coverage of the vehicle (detector height) as well as dwell time (detector width) have been cornerstone f ASM detector designs since 1987. These largearea plastic scintillation detectors are shock-mounted and housed in lead-lined, NEMA rated stainless steel detector enclosures, and are proven to withstand the rigors of industrial vehicle monitoring applications in the harshest environments. Data analysis and management is processed by the ASM/III System Control Unit and is available in two configurations; a wall mountable unit, incorporating an industrial grade PC or a desktop POD and commercially available PC. Designed to be operated with little or no operator intervention, the ASM/III SCU features simple, onebutton response to alarm conditions, while providing detailed scan and alarm data at the request of the operator. A color graphic display allows the viewing of detector data, alarm history and location of the detected source in the vehicle.Thermo's industry-leading "Natural Background Reduction" (NBR) technology offers significant gains in detection sensitivity, whie lowering false alarms due to naturally radioactive materials of no consequence of concern. Large area, premium-grade scintillation detectors provide 24/7 maximum detection to any objects, persons or vehicles passing by. Neutron detectors are also available to enhance detection of Special Nuclear Materials (SNM).We offer a configured approach to best facilitate each site-specific criteria to optimize protection without compromise in fulfilling the mission. A variety of controllers, detectors, options accessories and services all combine to ensure the highest level of security is assured. Our mission at Thermo, to maximize protection by delivering the very best technology, detection sensitivity and reliability, is no less important than your own - protecting our families, friends, neighbors and properties. The advanced Safety-Guard series of radiation detection systems utilizes a modular design that offers selection between two configurable controllers (Series I and Series II). To optimize detection coverage, upwards of 8 detectors may be linked to a controller using either the gamma only (G) or gamma-neutron (GN) detectors equipped with either 500 in3 or 1500 in3 scintillation volumes. Contact our security specialists to configure a system optimized to meet your criteria. The industry-leading "Natural Background Reduction" (NBR) technology offers significant gains in detection sensitivity for screening packages, people, or vehicles, for incident prevention and response.
